About this comparison

A sole trader is not legally required to hold a business account, but most banks' personal-account terms prohibit business use, and HMRC expects records that separate business from personal transactions. This table lists only the plans whose provider states, on the pages we read, that sole traders are eligible; where a provider does not publish an eligibility list the plan is not shown here, even if it may accept sole traders in practice.

One protection point matters more for sole traders than for companies: the FSCS treats a sole trader and their business as one person, so business and personal deposits at the same authorised bank share a single £120,000 limit.

Read the guide: Do sole traders need a business bank account?
